The Aisle Seat: Home Edition rolls into a new month with some new stuff for summer watchin’ on Netflix. So here we go – a handful of fresh picks, streaming for June…
#1) ‘Fuller House’: The Farewell Season (June 2nd)
The spinoff sitcom, which debuted its fifth and final season back in December, will roll out the last of its episodes. Cheesy? Yes. But this is bound to be a bit of an emotional goodbye to DJ, Stephanie and Kimmy as my generation (read here: not quite old, but definitely getting older) grew up with these girls. Bonus – Stamos will be back to say so long too. (Lori Loughlin? Doubt it, unless she gets released for good behavior.)
#2) ‘Spelling the Dream’ (June 3rd)
You don’t think the Scripps National Spelling Bee is exciting? Tell that to ESPN, the sports network that annual broadcasts the showdown. This documentary follows four South Asian-American competitors as they prepare the event. Again, tough the describe how surprisingly captivating this stuff can be – check out the trailer, and hopefully you’ll see why this should spell entertainment.
#3) ‘The Last Days of American Crime’ (June 5th)
Olivier Megaton, director of the second and third ‘Taken’ sequels, helms this crime thriller which dangles a cool ‘what if?’ aspect; here, the government plans to deploy a radio signal that will immediately stop any person from ever committing a crime. Given that premise…..what if a group of thugs turn the tables on the law and use the signal to their advantage in robbing the biggest bank they can find? If you love a good shoot-’em-up, this one looks like it could fit the bill.
#4) ‘Da 5 Bloods’ (June 12th)
Spike Lee is back! In his new drama, four African-American war vets return to Vietnam to find a chest of gold they buried during the war. Circle this date, film fans.
#5) ‘Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga’ (June 26th)
Odd? Oh, for sure. But darned if I’m not curious about this one. Based on the actual spectacle known as Eurovision, Netflix serves up a fictional alternative. ‘The Story of Fire Saga’ has Will Ferrell playing a small-town Icelandic wannabe superstar, who dresses like a Viking. Or maybe Thor….I don’t know. His partner is an equally unusual Rachel McAdams. The film also features Demi Lovato, Pierce Brosnan and Dan Stevens (‘Beauty and the Beast’) as a Russian crooner. Kudo’s to director David Dobkin for foregoing the usual trailer, substituting a music video for a tune called ‘Volcano Man’ by Ferrell’s Lars Erickssong and McAdams’ Sigrit Erickstdottr instead. Weirrrrrrrd.
