Culture Days are returning to the Northeast, this fall. After a hiatus, caused by the pandemic, Melfort will be hosting a total of four events, from September 24 – October 16.
Cultural Co-ordinator for the City of Melfort, Gailmarie Anderson told northeastNOW they’re excited to host, once again.
“It’s all about the culture of our community and embracing all of these different cultures, we call ourselves Canadians, but we all came from somewhere. It’ll be something for everybody, it’s important for the community to just celebrate together and to have fun together.”
September 24 will be Nigerian day, October 1 will be Indigenous culture day and October 16 will be Filipino culture day and Multicultural day, which will feature South Korean and East Indian culture.
Anderson explained the variety of days will provide citizens with a thorough education.
“This will be an opportunity to come out and enjoy the fellowship and enjoy learning about some of the other cultures. Their background is important to them, their homeland is important to them and it’s important to us as well. It’s just a wonderful opportunity to come together to celebrate being together in public and having a good time again.”
Drumming and dance performances, food, fashion, art, workshops and educational slide shows will headline each festivity.
Anderson mentioned how these activities give people the chance to strengthen connections.
“In order to develop relationships, you have to know each other, you have to trust each other and learn about each other, and that’s true for all of us. It’s really important to have information and knowledge about where people are from, and then we always move forward together.”
This will mark the 16th year culture days have been celebrated in Melfort, Saskatchewan and Canada.
Anderson added how happy people are to share their culture and have it recognized in the community.
“They feel accepted and welcomed into the community. They need to feel themselves represented in our history because they are a part of it.”
